Garnering physician buy-in: Quest Diagnostics strategic approach to lab partnerships

When Quest Diagnostics partnered with University Hospitals to transform ambulatory lab testing, a physician-centered engagement approach made the difference between success and disruption.

"You have to bring your most proximate stakeholders—the physicians—to the conversation from the beginning, almost in a co-design mode," explains David Sylvan, chief strategy officer at University Hospitals, describing Quest's collaborative methodology. 

Rather than simply implementing changes, Quest involved physicians at every level to co-create solutions that worked for patients and clinical workflows. Quest's solution model maintained local rapid response testing for time-sensitive needs while leveraging its national scale for routine tests.  

Through strategic partnership with Quest, University Hospitals was able to reinvest proceeds into enhancing pathology services, including a purpose-built center, strengthening their clinical capabilities.
