John Leake, MD, MPH
Dr. Leake is a Medical Director for Infectious Diseases at Quest Diagnostics in San Juan Capistrano, California. He has diverse clinical and research interests in pathogen virulence, host infectious disease susceptibility, and tropical medicine. He gained experience in field and laboratory investigations while at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention as an Epidemic Intelligence Service Officer working in sub-Saharan Africa, Asia, and Latin America. He then collaborated as a Principal Investigator on an NIH-funded leptospirosis immunogenic susceptibility project with Brazilian colleagues; the University of California, San Diego (UCSD), Department of Medicine; and Scripps Translational Science Institute. He also participated in studies on the genetic basis of chloroquine-resistant Plasmodium vivax in Indonesia and on whole genome pathogen sequencing of USA300 strains of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus.
Before joining Quest Diagnostics, he was an attending physician on the pediatric infectious diseases service at Rady Children’s Hospital-San Diego and Professor of Pediatrics and Medicine at UCSD. He earned an MD from UCSD, an MPH from UCLA, and a BA with honors in History and Literature from Harvard College.
