SureSwab®, Candidiasis, PCR

Test code(s) 16494

The SureSwab assay for candidiasis uses real-time PCR, which is a DNA amplification technique. The amplification can be blocked by interfering substances such as lubricants applied during gynecologic exams. With each PCR reaction, an Internal Positive Control (IPC) is added to the specimen to check the quality of the reaction. We look for a positive IPC in addition to Candida DNA. If the IPC is adequately detected, it means that the PCR reaction was successful. If not, there was a problem with the PCR reaction, and a negative result is not reliable.

Test cancellation with this message can be avoided by swabbing the site (ie, collecting the specimen) before applying lubricants and by avoiding areas with excessive mucus.
