Real-Time Polymerase Chain Reaction (RT-PCR)
Ureaplasma and mycoplasma bacteria are among the most common isolates from the human urogenital tract. U. parvum and U. urealyticum are associated with many diseases such as spontaneous abortion, premature birth, postpartum endometritis, and pneumonia with bronchopulmonary dysplasia among others. M. genitalium was first identified as a cause of inflammatory urogenital disease in men but has since been implicated in causing pelvic inflammatory disease in women and many more medical problems. The current method for detecting and identifying M. hominis and U. urealyticum is culture. For this reason the test takes several days and cannot differentiate between different species of mycoplasma and ureaplasma. Direct detection by PCR is more rapid.
