Non-frozen specimens: Broth Amplified Immunoassay with culture reflex
Frozen specimens: Direct detection without amplification or culture
False-positives occur in patients infected with Pseudomonas aeruginosa.

This test detects shiga toxins produced by enterohemorrhagic E. coli and other enteric organisms which have been isolated from patients who have hemorrhagic colitis with or without hemolytic-uremic syndrome (HUS). Culture allows CDC to track outbreaks by strain typing.
