Clinical Significance

This procedure detects viral infection by Human Metapneumovirus (hMPV). The DFA test methodology provides a rapid diagnostic in the detection of hMPV as the causative agent of respiratory illness. This type of lab result, in conjunction with all the other information about the patient can assist the physician in rendering a diagnosis. Diagnosis of virus infection facilitates appropriate selection of antiviral drug therapy, if available, and prevents the inappropriate use of antibiotics and subsequent development of antibiotic-resistant strains of bacteria.
