Patient preparation:

Patient must be fasting and at complete rest with no recent
heavy exercise (ex: not short of breath due to exertion).
Tourniquet must be used minimaly, and preferably not at
all. Fist clenching must be avoided.

1 mL frozen plasma from sodium flouride-potassium oxalate
gray-top tube.

Collect full tube on wet ice. Centribuge sample within 15
minutes of collection. Separate cells from plasma and freeze
within 4 hours of collection. Freeze plasma and ship frozen.

Clinical Significance

Lactic acid is the endproduct of the anaerobic metabolism of glucose. The blood lactic acid concentration is affected by its production in muscle cells and erythrocytes and its rate of metabolism in the liver. During exercise, blood lactate can increase up to ten times of normal levels.
