Test Code

CPT Code(s)

81001, 87086

Complete Urinalysis, Routine Urine Culture

Preferred Specimen(s)

8 mL random urine in Stockwell Plastic Yellow Top urinalysis tube
and 5 mL clean-catch, midstream random urine in a culture transport (grey-top) tube
For a pediatric patient, urine specimen less than 5 mL, collect or place urine in a sterile leak-proof container

Collection Instructions

Encourage clean catch mid stream to minimize contamination and improve accuracy.
Pediatric specimens should be labeled as such and store refrigerated until tested.

Transport Container

Urinalysis transport (Stockwell Plastic Yellow Top) tube
Culture transport (grey-top) tube
Sterile container <5 mL (for pediatric patients only)

Transport Temperature

Refrigerated (cold packs)

Specimen Stability

Room temperature: 72 hours
Refrigerated: 72 hours

Reject Criteria

The red & yellow swirl-top tube cannot be used for collection and transport of specimens for urine cultures. The preservative contains proprionic acid, p-hydroxylbenzoic acid ethyl ester, chlorohexidine diacetate crystalline, which inhibit bacterial growth.
Vacutainer brand culture transport (grey-top) tubes are not acceptable for urinalysis testing. The transport tubes contain boric acid, which may increase specific gravity and decrease pH results.
