Clinical Significance

WA1 is a Babesia-like piroplasm recently associated with
cases of babesiosis in the Pacific Northwest. Studies
indicate a seroprevalence rate of approximately 20% in
Pacific Northwest residents, including those living in
northern California. Little, if any, cross-reactivity
occurs between Babesia microti and WA1.
