VAP Cholesterol Test [10270X]

Test Code

CPT Code(s)

Total Cholesterol, Direct LDL Cholesterol, HDL Cholesterol, and direct measured Triglycerides, 21 Lipid Subfractions, Lp(a), IDL-C and LDL pattern size, non-HDL cholesterol components: LDL, IDL, Lp(a), and VLDL

Preferred Specimen(s)

2 mL serum (SS, serum separator tube), frozen -20 degrees
C or frozen -70 degrees C
Minimum: 1.5 mL
RT: Unacceptable
Refrigerated (cold packs): 7 days
Frozen: 30 days
Frozen -70 degrees C: 1 year
Specimens must be shipped to Atherotech Monday through
Instructions: Draw specimen into one 5 mL (13 x 100mm)
Serum Separator Tube (SS). Write(legibly) the patient's
first and last name on the SS tube label. Gently invert
5-10 times immediately after blood draw. Allow specimen
to clot in an upright position for a minimum of 30
Centrifuge samples for 15 minutes [@ standard 3400 rpm)].
Refrigerate samples and ship for receipt within 24 hrs
of blood draw. Refrigerate serum until shipment. Serum
can be refrigerated for a maximum of 7 days. DO NOT
FREEZE SS TUBES. Prepare sample for shipping by ensuring
the tube is tightly capped. Place tubes and FROZEN COLD
PACK into the Styrofoam container. DO NOT FREEZE SS
Please note: Samples may be frozen by pouring the sample
into an aliquot tube and freezing -20 degrees C.
Although 10-12 hour fast (no alcohol for 24 hours) is
required for the most accurate triglyceride measurement,
all other values of the VAP test are directly measured
and fasting does not affect their outcome.
Reject Criteria
Specimen is grossly hemolyzed;
Specimen is warm to the touch upon receipt; Shipment does
not contain a prefrozen cold pack; Specimen is whole
blood or EDTA plasma; Specimen is not labeled properly;

Specimen is quantity not sufficient;
Expiration date of SS tube had been exceeded;
SS tube is frozen;
Red-top tube or gel barrier tube is received.

measures total cholesterol, HDL, LDL, and triglycerides,
along with intermediate-density lipoprotein (IDL), LDL
pattern density, HDL subtypes, and very low-density
lipoprotein (VLDL), including their components,
subclasses, and LDL pattern size.
