Organic Acids, Qualitative, Urine
77 Organic Acids. Contact the Laboratory for details.
13 mL frozen random urine, no preservative, submitted in each of 2 sterile urine transport containers. If volume is less than 4 mL, call the Biomedical Genetics Laboratory for instructions. To prevent delays in testing, the laboratory requests the receipt of two labeled containers: One container containing specimen for organic acid analysis. One transport tube labeled for creatinine analysis, used for normalizing results. Do not use preservatives. Avoid fecal contamination of urine.
Note: Patient age is required for correct reference range.

Gas Chromatography/Mass Spectrophotometry (GC/MS)
This test is a qualitative screen for identification of organic acids that are at least moderately increased. It is recommended that elevated organic acids be confirmed by quantitative urine organic acid analysis.
This screen may miss disorders characterized by minimal or intermittent metabolite excretion, especially if the patient is asymptomatic at the time of specimen collection. The following metabolites are also poorly extracted from urine by this method, and may result in a missed diagnosis: 3-hydroxyisovaleric acid, 4-hydroxybutyric acid, glutaconic acid, glyoxylic acid, mevalonic acid, pyruvic acid and suberylglycine.
Reference ranges are provided as general guidance only. To interpret test results use the reference range in the laboratory report.
