Squamous cells of the cervix

Squamous cells are cells on the surface of the cervix that look flat and scalelike under a microscope. Squamous cells are found in the constantly changing (transformation) zone of the cervix where columnar (rectangular-shaped) cells are transforming into squamous cells normally. This area of changing cells is the most common place on the cervix for abnormal cells to develop.
