Discharge from the vagina or penis and urinary symptoms

Sometimes mild urinary symptoms, such as painful urination (dysuria), can be a symptom of an infection that is not related to the bladder or kidneys. When mild urinary symptoms are present along with discharge from the vagina or penis, a vaginal or penile infection may be the cause.

When burning during urination is the only symptom, an infection of the vagina or urethra (urethritis) may be present.

In women, vaginal discharge may occur with several types of vaginal infections, such as yeast infections or bacterial vaginosis.

Discharge from the vagina or penis can also be a symptom of a sexually transmitted disease (STD). If you have symptoms of an infection:

  • Do not have sexual contact until you have been treated by a health professional. This will reduce the risk of spreading a possible infection to your partner.
  • Your partner may need to be treated as well.
