Symptoms of a serious headache

New symptoms that occur with a headache may be a sign of a more serious problem, such as a stroke. Be aware of symptoms such as:

  • A sudden, severe headache.
  • Changes in balance or coordination.
  • Fever.
  • Mental changes, including confusion or sleepiness.
  • Muscle weakness.
  • Nausea and vomiting.
  • Numbness or tingling.
  • Trouble swallowing or being unable to swallow.
  • Vision changes.
