Contagious illness and fever in a child

The cause of a child's fever may seem apparent when an illness that causes a fever has been diagnosed in the child's family, friends, or in the community, especially in a day care or baby-sitting facility.

However, just because a child has been exposed to a contagious illness doesn't necessarily mean that the child's fever is being caused by that illness. Evaluate your child's symptoms to determine whether a visit to a health professional is needed, even if you think the contagious illness is the most likely cause of the fever.
