Symptoms that may indicate a serious condition with unexpected vaginal bleeding

Symptoms that may indicate a serious condition when they occur with unexpected vaginal bleeding include:

  • Lightheadedness or fainting, especially when you change positions, such as rising to stand from a sitting position.
  • Fever.
  • Pelvic pain or severe cramps
  • Pain with intercourse.
  • Shoulder pain without injury or explanation.
  • Vomiting.
  • Passage of clots or tissue from the vagina.

Bleeding during pregnancy is more likely to be serious if the bleeding is moderate to severe or is accompanied by lower abdominal (pelvic) pain. These symptoms may be caused by an infection, ectopic pregnancy, miscarriage, or another serious problem.

If you know that you are pregnant and you have vaginal bleeding, call your health professional to discuss your symptoms.
