Other conditions with symptoms similar to celiac disease
Conditions that may cause symptoms that resemble those of celiac disease include:
- Food intolerance.
- Colic.
- Cystic fibrosis.
- Crohn's disease.
- Irritable bowel syndrome.
- A parasitic infection of the intestine, such as giardiasis.
- Some forms of colitis.
Some health conditions seem to be more common in people who have celiac disease than in those who do not, although the exact cause-and-effect relationship is unclear. These conditions include:
- Dermatitis herpetiformis (more common in adults but can occur in children).
- Osteoporosis.
- Type 1 diabetes (insulin-dependent).
- Autoimmune thyroid disease.
- Down syndrome.
- Selective antibody deficiency (IgA).
- Sjogren's syndrome.
- Iron deficiency anemia or folic acid deficiency anemia.
