Medical history for Down syndrome

A diagnosis of Down syndrome shortly after a baby's birth is based on his or her physical features and results of chromosomal studies. The medical history adds information to support the diagnosis. This information can be especially valuable because test results for the condition can take more than 2 weeks to confirm.

The medical history will include:

  • Information about problems during the pregnancy.
  • The results of any tests for Down syndrome during the pregnancy.
  • Information about problems during labor and delivery.
  • The baby's birth weight and whether he or she had any problems after birth.
  • Whether you or your partner has a family history of Down syndrome.

A diagnosis also may be suspected or confirmed during pregnancy from the results of certain tests, if given.
