Our Response to Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19)

Coronavirus Disease 2019 or COVID-19 (formally known as 2019-nCoV) is the name for the respiratory syndrome caused by infection with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). On January 30, 2020, the World Health Organization declared COVID-19 a public health emergency of international concern.

Quest Diagnostics is monitoring the situation closely. Our priority is the health and safety of our employees, patients and the communities we serve. The content below provides information for providers and others to help guide their management of patients. We encourage providers to periodically check this web page for updates on our response.

Important Information for Providers:

  • Only the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and other public health labs are authorized to provide testing for COVID-19 in the U.S.
  • Providers should contact their public health authority for information on managing individuals potentially infected with the virus and transferring specimens of patients for testing.
  • Quest does not offer testing for COVID-19.
  • Quest does not collect, process or transport specimens from patients suspected of, or confirmed to have, COVID-19.
  • Providers should not refer any specimens for any patient suspected of COVID-19 until and unless CDC testing has ruled out infection or the CDC or other public health laboratory has cleared the patient of risk for COVID-19.
  • Providers should not refer any patient suspected of infection with COVID-19 to a Quest Diagnostics Patient Service Center or other location until and unless CDC testing has ruled out infection or the CDC or other public health laboratory has cleared the patient of risk for COVID-19.

We encourage providers to review the CDC website to guide their patient management and lab testing for COVID-19: www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov

FAQs

What is Coronavirus Disease 2019?
Coronavirus Disease 2019 or COVID-19 (formally known as 2019-nCoV) is the name for the respiratory syndrome caused by infection with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2).

Does Quest offer testing for COVID-19?
No. Only the CDC and other public health labs performing a CDC-produced lab test are authorized to provide testing for COVID-19. Therefore, Quest does not offer testing for COVID-19.

I’m a physician client. If Quest does not have a test for COVID-19, who should I contact if I have a patient suspected of infection?
We recommend that providers contact their public health authority for information on managing individuals with possible COVID-19. The CDC provides information at: www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov.

Does Quest process specimens for patients suspected of being infected with COVID-19?
No. Quest does not collect, process or transport specimens from patients suspected of, or confirmed to have, COVID-19. We recommend that providers contact their public health authority for information on managing potentially affected individuals. The CDC provides information at: www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov.

Are there any cases where Quest may perform testing for a specimen suspected of COVID-19?
According to the CDC, clinical laboratories may perform testing on non-respiratory tract specimens (e.g. blood, serum, urine) of suspected COVID-19 patients provided they follow standard laboratory practices, including Standard Precautions (BSL2). Accordingly, Quest will process and perform testing on these non-respiratory specimens.

Does Quest plan to offer a test for this virus?
Quest is exploring options to offer a lab test that would potentially supplement testing by public health labs.

Does Quest have experience with testing for emerging infectious diseases?
Yes, Quest was the first national commercial provider to offer Zika and 2009 H1N1 influenza testing that was emergency use authorized by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
